About BantamEvans Estates (1956) Limited is the private, family-owned company that owns Bantham beach, as well as various properties in and around the village of Bantham and extensive areas of land on both sides of the Avon estuary. It is also responsible, among other things, for managing the Bantham harbour facilities.
The estate at Bantham has been in the same family for several generations. Their ethos has always been to allow Bantham to remain a place of outstanding beauty, with the village’s old thatched cottages portraying an image of unchanging charm and the beach and its surrounds staying as wild and natural as can be.
A lot of work is required on and behind the scenes to make this possible, of course. The company’s management and staff are fully committed to the same principles in keeping the beach and related facilities in good order, maintaining the cottages and other properties, and attending to the upkeep of the coastal footpaths, sand dunes and woodlands.
Evans Estates has consistently set its face against commercialisation of the beach. It is determined that families should continue to enjoy a peaceful day out in an unspoilt environment. However, close attention is given to the ever-increasing needs of health and safety. In particular, an RNLI lifeguard service is provided throughout the season by arrangement with South Hams District Council.
Although opposed to undue commercialism, the company wishes the Bantham community to remain both viable and vibrant in the long term. Whenever practicable, therefore, vacant accommodation is offered to young people and their families and work on the estate is assigned to local businesses and tradesmen.
